Blizzard of 1993

View from front window of our old house on 24th Street in Cleveland, looking south toward Superior Avenue on the afternoon of Christmas Day 1993. There was no snow on the ground that morning, the storm moved in by early afternoon leaving about twenty inches by the following morning.

Chicago: Belmont Theatre

The 3,200 seat Belmont Theatre at 1635 W. Belmont Avenue was built by the local Lubliner & Trinz circuit and opened in 1925. The architect W.W. Ahlschlager later became famous as the designer of the Roxy Theatre. Balaban & Katz took over the theatre in 1930 and operated it until the mid 1960's when it was converted into a bowling alley. The theatre was razed in 1996.

Philadelphia: Boyd Theatre

Philadelphia's Boyd Theatre at 1908 Chestnut Street, opened on December 25, 1928, Cinerama was installed in 1953. The theatre was renamed the Sam Eric in 1971 and closed in 2002. Now endangered, a group is trying to save Philadelphia's last motion picture palace. Allen Theatre


An example of proper lighting from Box Office Magazine, September 4, 1954. I remember selling tix in that BO, changing posters in the cases, letters on the marquee. In the winter the letters would freeze in the tracks, I'd bang them loose with a T. Every so often we'd hose the front down.
